Mehrangarh Fort
CastlesDescription
Mehrangarh Fort is a castles in India, Asia. Mehrangarh Museum Trust — History gives its chronology as “The museum trust attributes the foundation to Rao Jodha during his reign, 1438–1489; later rulers enlarged the complex over subsequent centuries.” Mehrangarh Museum Trust — History also records: “A fortified Rathore royal residence and military centre incorporating palaces, religious spaces and patronage of the arts.”
Mehrangarh crowns an isolated rocky hill above Jodhpur in Rajasthan. Rao Jodha chose the site for its elevation and natural defences, moving the Rathore centre of power away from Mandore. The town that grew below the fort took its name from him. The museum trust describes the hill as rising about 400 feet above the surrounding plain. That is the height of the landform, not a measurement of the castle walls, and should not be used to scale a 3D building model. The imposing effect comes from the relationship between the rock, ramparts and palace buildings. Mehrangarh was never merely a military installation. It housed rulers and their families, supported music, literature and the arts, and contained temples and shrines. Its courts and palaces reflect these overlapping functions, while its defences record centuries of rivalry and changing relations with the Delhi Sultanate and Mughal Empire. Generations of Rathore rulers developed the complex. The museum now preserves objects associated with that courtly life alongside the architecture. A present-day representation should distinguish the complete hilltop site from individual palace buildings rather than treating the whole ensemble as one uniform block.
